There
are two adjacent cathedrals in the city of Salamanca in Spain. The "Old
Cathedral" (Catedral Vieja), built in the 12th century, and the "New
Cathedral" (Catedral Nueva), built in the 16th century. This New
Cathedral was built between 1513 and 1733 underwent restoration work in 1992
where they found carving of an astronaut on the wall of a cathedral.
HOW IT
CAME THERE? HOW A 20TH CENTURY ASTRONAUT CAME TO BE CARVED BY A 12TH CENTURY
STONEMASON?
On the
New Cathedral’s entrance that the astronaut appears, running laterally,
parallel to the entrance. He sits perched on a stalk complete with boots,
helmet, and what appears to be a breathing apparatus on his chest with tubes
stretching to a pack on the rear of his suit.
He is
grasping with his right hand what appears to be a vine acting as a harness of
sorts running across his waist. His left hand is grasping a nearby leaf for
support. His face reflects a rather bewildered expression.
Mystery
Solved:
It is a
generally a tradition of cathedral builders and restorers to add details or new
carvings to the facade as a sort of signature. The restoration of the Cathedral
of Salamanca in 1992 integrated modern and contemporary motifs, including a
carved figure of an astronaut.
The use
of this motif was in the tradition of cathedral builders and restorers
including contemporary motifs among older ones as a way of signing their works.
The person responsible for the restoration, Jeronimo Garcia, chose an astronaut
as a symbol of the twentieth century.
Nice one :) Peru does have caves with similar inscriptions from ancient times, also Egyptian pyramids had inscriptions of UFO's which were eventually covered up. The astronaut look pretty cool here though, good restoration by authorities.
