We have seen and heard about the organs transplant to different human
bodies but is it possible to transplant the head to another human body? We think
it's a science fiction.Yes! It is possible. The first head transplant will be
going to happen in December 2017.
Italian Neurosurgeon Sergio Canavero plans to do the £14 million
experimental first head transplant operation in December 2017 as he got a
volunteer named Valery Spiridonov, a 31 year old Russian software development
manager who suffers from a debilitating muscle-wasting disease.
Through this head transplant operation, person will be getting a new body
which is free from any diseases.
About The Operation:
-The donor body will come from someone who is brain dead and whose organs
would be considered acceptable for transplantation.
-Spiridonov’s head will be cooled to around 12 degrees Celsius to slow
damage to brain cells.
-Surgeons then would cut down the soft tissue in the neck. Tubes would be
affixed to all the arteries and veins to maintain blood flow.
-Then, Canavero plans to use a diamond knife to cut the spinal cord.
-The head is then moved onto the donor body as quickly as possible.
-For joining up the ends of the spinal cords.Canavero suggests to use a substance called polyethylene glycol, which
would help fatty cell membranes meld together.
-The patient will then be put in a drug-induced coma for four weeks while
the connection between the head and body heals.
-Canavero says all the technology he needs is available, and estimates the
procedure will take about 36 hours for the operation.
-Canavero expects a 90% chance of success, as in a 90% chance the patient is
up and walking around a few months after the surgery.
But.....
The potentially ground-breaking treatment was performed on a monkey in
1970.
The animal only lived for eight days after the body rejected the new head,
leaving the monkey unable to breath and move.
